Somerset House
Somerset House, a grand neoclassical building on the Strand, hosts contemporary art exhibitions, a courtyard that transforms seasonally (fountains in summer, an ice rink in winter), and the Courtauld Gallery within the same complex.
The Courtyard
Free to enter year-round. In summer, 55 fountains provide a popular cooling spot for families. In winter (November–January), the courtyard becomes one of London's most atmospheric ice rinks — book ahead as it sells out.
Exhibitions
Somerset House runs a strong programme of contemporary art, photography and design exhibitions — some free, some ticketed. Check current listings before visiting.
The Courtauld Gallery
Within the same building, the Courtauld holds an exceptional small collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterworks — ticketed separately.
Getting There
Temple or Covent Garden stations are both a short walk.
Tips
- The courtyard fountains are free and a great spot for families in summer.
- Book the winter ice rink well in advance — it sells out.
The River Terrace
A newer addition to Somerset House, the River Terrace opens directly onto the Thames walkway with its own café — a quieter spot than the main courtyard, worth knowing about for a break away from the crowds.
Studios and Open Days
Somerset House hosts working artist studios as part of its creative community programme, with periodic open days letting visitors see work in progress — check the current events calendar if this interests you.
Tips
- The River Terrace is a quieter alternative to the main courtyard on a busy day.
- Check the events calendar for open studio days if you're interested in seeing artists at work.
