Kew Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — cover 330 acres in southwest London and hold one of the world's most important collections of living plants (around 50,000 species) alongside historic glasshouses, a treetop walkway and a Japanese pagoda. It's one of London's most rewarding half or full-day destinations, especially from spring through autumn.

Tickets & Hours

Adult tickets start from around £22 booked online, with concessions and child rates available. The gardens are open daily year-round, typically 10:00am–7:00pm in summer (April–August) and 10:00am–4:00pm in winter, with the glasshouses closing slightly earlier. Annual memberships are good value if you're visiting London more than once or plan to come back.

What to See

The Palm House — a giant Victorian iron-and-glass hothouse from 1848 — is the architectural highlight. The Temperate House (the world's largest Victorian glasshouse) reopened after a major restoration. The Treetop Walkway puts you 18 metres above the tree canopy on a steel walkway. In spring, the woodland and the bluebells make Kew one of the best places in London; in summer the Rose Garden and the aquatic garden are at their best.

Getting There

Kew Gardens station (District line and London Overground) is right outside the Victoria Gate entrance. About 30 minutes from central London.

Tips for Visiting

• Book online in advance — slightly cheaper than the door.
• Allow at least three hours; a full day doesn't feel wasted.
• Spring (March–May) is Kew at its most spectacular — bluebells, magnolias and cherry blossom.
• The café and restaurant inside the gardens are well-regarded; no need to bring food.
