Brixton

Brixton is one of South London's most energetic neighbourhoods — a long-established Afro-Caribbean community that has shaped the area's food, music and culture over decades, alongside a more recent influx of independent restaurants, bars and creative businesses. It's loud, busy, and genuinely worth a visit.

Brixton Market & Market Row

Brixton Village (an arcade of independent food stalls and restaurants) and Market Row (the adjoining covered market) are the heart of the area — a mix of West African and Caribbean grocers, fishmongers, and some of the best and most diverse restaurant choices in South London. Open daily, busiest on weekends. Coldharbour Lane, running off the market, holds more independent bars and restaurants.

Live Music

Brixton Academy (now OVO Arena Wembley's smaller counterpart in terms of prestige) is one of London's iconic mid-size music venues, hosting major touring artists in a standing and raked floor layout. The Electric Brixton and smaller venues add to a strong local music scene.

David Bowie Connection

David Bowie was born in Brixton in 1947, and a mural on the corner of Tunstall Road has become an unofficial memorial — particularly busy in the days around his birthday in January.

Getting There

Brixton (Victoria line) is direct from central London — around 15 minutes from Victoria.

Tips for Visiting

• Brixton Village is the best single destination — walk the full arcade and Market Row before deciding where to eat.
• Weekend afternoons are the most atmospheric but also the busiest.
• Coldharbour Lane has good independent bars worth exploring in the evening.
