Borough Market, tucked under the railway arches near London Bridge, traces its roots back over a thousand years and is now one of the city's best-loved food markets — a mix of produce stalls, artisan food producers and ready-to-eat street food from around the world.

What to Eat

This is a graze-your-way-round market rather than a sit-down-for-one-thing market: cheese stalls, fresh oysters, wood-fired pizza, Ethiopian and Southeast Asian stalls, and some of London's best bread and pastry sit side by side. Go hungry and try several small things rather than filling up on the first stall you see.

Opening Hours

The market runs Monday to Saturday, with reduced stalls on Mondays and Tuesdays and the full market in swing Wednesday to Saturday. It's closed on Sundays. Mornings are calmer than lunchtime, when it gets genuinely packed with office workers and visitors alike.

Getting There

London Bridge station (Jubilee & Northern lines, plus National Rail) is right next to the market — you'll likely pass through it on the way. It's also a short, scenic walk along the South Bank from Tower Bridge or the Tate Modern.

Tips for Visiting

• Go on a weekday morning if you can — Saturday lunchtime is the busiest window by far.
• Bring some cash as well as card — most stalls take both, but a few smaller ones prefer cash.
• Graze across several stalls rather than one big meal — it's built for that.
• Combine with a South Bank walk — Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe and Tower Bridge are all within easy walking distance.
