Best Curry in London: A Deeper Guide

Brick Lane gets the tourist attention, but London's best curry is usually found elsewhere.

Southall

West London's Southall is the largest Punjabi community outside South Asia — exceptional for Punjabi home-style cooking, street food and sweets.

Tooting

South London's Tooting has a strong South Indian and Sri Lankan scene — excellent dosas and vegetarian thalis.

Tips

What to Order in Southall

Southall's Punjabi kitchens excel at tandoori dishes, saag paneer, and the kind of slow-cooked dals that rarely appear on West End menus aimed at tourists. Street stalls sell excellent chaat and samosas — a good way to graze before a sit-down meal. The Sunday market atmosphere along the Broadway adds to the experience even if you're not there to shop.

What to Order in Tooting

Tooting's South Indian restaurants specialise in dosas — thin, crisp rice-and-lentil crêpes served with coconut chutney and sambar — alongside excellent vegetarian thalis. Sri Lankan kottu roti (chopped flatbread stir-fried with vegetables and spices) is another regional speciality worth seeking out here that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere in London.

Beyond the Big Two

Drummond Street near Euston has a small but excellent cluster of South Indian vegetarian restaurants, useful if you're staying central and don't want the journey out to Tooting or Southall. East Ham and Green Street (Newham) offer another strong Bangladeshi and Indian food corridor, less written about than Brick Lane but consistently good.
