Edinburgh

Edinburgh — Scotland's capital — is technically reachable as a very long day trip from London, but strongly rewards at least one night away. It's one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, compact enough to explore on foot, and the train journey from London is one of the most scenic in Britain.

Getting There

LNER trains from London King's Cross reach Edinburgh Waverley in about 4.5–5 hours on direct services — scenic through Northumberland and along the Northumbrian coast. Advance booking brings prices down to £30–50 single in good time; booking the day before can cost £150+. Budget flights from Heathrow or London City take about 90 minutes flying time but with check-in and transit often work out a similar total journey time. For an overnight trip, the Caledonian Sleeper from Euston is a memorable option.

What to See

Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline and is the obvious starting point. The Royal Mile runs from the Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse — the full walk takes an hour with stops. Arthur's Seat (an extinct volcano in Holyrood Park, free to climb) gives the best view of the city from above. The National Museum of Scotland is free and excellent. Leith, Edinburgh's port neighbourhood, has one of Scotland's best restaurant and bar scenes.

Tips

• Book LNER train tickets at least 6–8 weeks ahead for the best prices.
• One night minimum is strongly recommended — a same-day return from London gives you 5 hours in the city at best.
• The Edinburgh Festival (August) is world-class but accommodation triples in price — book months ahead.
• Arthur's Seat is a free 45-minute climb with a genuinely spectacular view.
