London in Summer

Summer in London runs properly from June through August — long days stretching to nearly 10pm, parks at their peak, and an outdoor events calendar that doesn't exist in any other season.

Parks & Open Spaces

The Royal Parks in summer are transformed — Hyde Park, Regent's Park and Greenwich Park all have their own events programmes including concerts, theatre and sports. Deckchair hire returns to St James's Park and Hyde Park. The Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park opens for swimming in June.

Open-Air Cinema & Theatre

Rooftop and open-air cinema screenings proliferate across London in summer — Luna Cinema and Rooftop Film Club are two of the larger operators, with screenings in parks, on rooftops and in unusual venues. Open-air theatre runs at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre and at Shakespeare's Globe (April–October). Book any of these well in advance.

Festivals & Events

Wimbledon fortnight (late June/early July) is the biggest annual sporting event in the London calendar — the public ballot for tickets closes in December, but a limited number of court tickets are released each morning during the tournament. Notting Hill Carnival (August bank holiday weekend) is Europe's largest street festival. Pride in London (usually late June) transforms central London for a weekend.

Managing the Heat

London's buildings and the Underground are not built for heat — air conditioning is the exception rather than the rule, and during heatwaves the Tube can be genuinely very hot. Early morning and evening are the cooler times for outdoor activity. Museums are a good cool refuge during the hottest part of the afternoon.
