London in Spring
Spring is many regular London visitors' favourite season — the parks come alive, daylight extends, crowds haven't yet peaked, and the city shakes off winter's grey in ways that feel genuinely transformative.
The Parks in Bloom
March to May is when the Royal Parks are at their best. St James's Park's wildflower areas emerge first; Hyde Park's flower walk peaks in April; Regent's Park's rose garden hits its first flush in late May. Richmond Park's Isabella Plantation azaleas (late April) are one of London's most spectacular seasonal events and completely free. Kew Gardens' cherry blossom and bluebells from mid-March to May justify the entry price for this season alone.
Chelsea Flower Show (May)
The Chelsea Flower Show (usually the third week of May) is one of the world's most prestigious garden shows, held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Tickets sell out and should be booked months ahead. Even if you're not attending, the King's Road and Chelsea neighbourhoods take on a particular atmosphere during show week.
Longer Days
By April, London has sunset around 8pm and by May it's approaching 9pm — the evening light transforms the South Bank, the parks and the riverside. Evening walks that wouldn't be practical in winter become some of the best experiences in the city.
Tips
- Richmond Park's Isabella Plantation in late April is one of London's best free seasonal highlights — don't miss it if you're in the city then.
- Kew Gardens is particularly worth the entry fee in March–May.
- Spring bank holidays (Easter and May half-term) bring higher prices and more crowds — factor this into timing.
- Chelsea Flower Show tickets should be booked in January–February for the best selection.
